Rule One of Business: Get Paid

You would be surprised at the amount of business people who have their customer base to simply pay when and if they get on with it. I know of one tradesman who always makes bad debts like charms. Why is that? Simply because he can’t bring himself to ask for the money and allows people to take advantage of him.
If you permit a client credit, do so only when they proved themselves to you by paying cash on delivery (COD) for a time. Moreover, you need to see whether they have the resources to pay you - if they don’t then don’t do business with them. Don’t fool yourself into saying “I need the work” or “I need the sales”. It’s pointless in doing the work or providing the goods for zip if you do not get paid.
If you are the type of person who can’t ask for the fee after the job has been finished, try these tips:
Tell your client that when the service is done with, you require cash or cheque. They should probably have it there at completion and you do not have to demand your money.
When you hand out an initial quote, make sure your payment terms are evident.
Do up an invoice that has your terms of payment simply printed and hand the customer the invoice when the work is completed. They can look at the invoice and reactively assume they should pay the money now without you going to say a word. Fabricate an “evil boss” who might flay you alive if you do not go back with the payment for the service.
Set up your banking institution to hook you up with Merchant facilities so you can accept credit cards including Mastercard and Visa. Most people possess credit cards and it can prevent the dilemma of the client not owning a cheque account or not having enough cash in their pocket.
Alternatively, don’t be asked not to hold onto the promised goods till the payment is made. Remember, until the goods are paid for, the goods remain to be yours.
If you decide you’re going to permit someone credit, be sure you have the following information of them a week PREVIOUSLY you permit them credit.
- Name
- Address
- Phone number
- Bank name and address
- Account no.
- 3 trade references with their names, addresses and phone numbers
After you know all this detail, ring the bank and make sure that they do use an account there. Then, telephone each trade reference and inquire if they pay their fees on time or if they have any problems with them.
Most people will be willing to tell you if the person is troublesome. If everything is OK, allow them a moderate level of debt, say no more than $500 (depending on your business). Monitor the operation of the account for a few months before allowing this amount to be exceeded.
