Bear a plastic water bottle at your own peril; the tide of popular view is forming against you. From popular rating documentaries, to books and politics, the hottest issue on the soapbox is the horror of bottled water and the waste of resources the industry forces.
The processing, transporting and waste of water in petrochemical plastic bottles consumes huge use of water alongside energy, and generates large amounts of greenhouse gases and waste.
Director of the hot new documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig claims “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped crew are publicizing the show with an across-America roadshow, asking sponsorships from donors to lower their water bottle use and swapping their used plastic water bottle in exchange for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.
A similar film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. Created by Annie Leonard of the famous ‘The Story of Stuff’, this film displays the strategy that is behind convincing Americans into purchasing around hundreds of millions of bottles of water a week, instead of a few cents cost for clean tap water. See the animation on You Tube.
Through her book ‘Bottlemania’, writer Elizabeth Royte demonstrates one of the biggest marketing tricks of the last century and demands a powerful environmental alarm bell. She investigates the problems we must at some point respond to. Who has ownership of the water? What happens when a bottled-water company possesses your town’s water source? Is the water that comes from the tap absolutely safe? What is the environmental cost of producing, transportation and waste of a plastic water bottle?
Politicians all around the world are beginning to understand that they are required to take action – particularly when the meetings where they collate are major consumers of bottled water. How often do we observe a politician in a press conference drinking from a water bottle. It is probable that they might drink from a water glass in Parliament House.
Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, told “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”
In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first community from Australia to prevent the selling of bottled water. About 60 places in the United States and a few towns in Canada and the UK have at this point banned expending taxpayer money on bottled water.
It is certain that these dilemmas will be discussed during World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the globe’s most problematic water-related dilemmas.

The tensile-strength test is innately fruitless; at the time of the process of gathering data, the sample is wasted. Although this is excusable when a large sample of the sample exists, nondestructive tests are desirable for materials that are costly or arduous to fabricate or that have been made into completed or semifinished products.
Liquids
One commonly used nondestructive test, utilized to see surface marks and flaws in samples, requires a penetrating fluid, which is either brightly coloured or fluorescent. After being left on the surface of the material and set to soak into any small flaws, the fluid is rubbed away, leaving totally visible markings and weaknesses. Another such test, used for nonmetals, requires an electrically charged fluid smeared on the sample surface. After the extra fluid is cleaned off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the sample and sinks into the breaks. Neither of these processes, however, can identify internal breaks.
Radiation
Internal, as well as external flaws, can be located under X-ray or gamma-ray techniques in which the radiation passes through the material and impinges on a subject photographic film. On some occasions, it may be possible to target the X rays toward a significant part within the sample, permitting a 3-dimensional description of the flaw markings as well as its site.
Sound
Ultrasonic inspection of sections takes transmission of sound waves higher than human hearing range within the test sample. By the reflection technique, a sound wave is sent from one area of the sample, reflected from the other side, and signalled back to a receiver situated at the original point. When impinging on a break or failure in the material, the signal is reflected and its transmission adapted. The actual delay becomes a signal of the location of the mark; a map of the sample can then be generated to show the area and shape of the weaknesses. With the through-transmission technique, the transmitter and receiver are located at the opposite sides of the subject; interruptions in the passage of the sound waves are used to target and measure weaknesses. Usually a water medium is used in which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.
Magnetism
As the magnetic elements of a material are strongly reflected by its overall structure, magnetic techniques can be utilized to reveal the placement and relative dimensions of voids and cracks. By magnetic testing, a tool is utilized that contains a large length of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Located within this larger object is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is attached an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the first coil causes the current to flow through the secondary coil through the technique of induction. When an iron piece is placed into the secondary coil, sharp changes in the further current will indicate imperfections in the bar. This process only isolates differentiations in zones on the length of a bar and will not locate longer or continued marks very often. An analogous technique, utilizing eddy currents induced by a primary coil, also might be utilized to detect marks and marks. A steady current is induced within the test item. Weaknesses that lie in the signal of the current change resistance of the test object; this adaptation will then be measured by the correct tools.
Infrared
Infrared techniques also have been utilized to locate material continuity in complicated construction objects. By testing the strength of adhesive joins between the sandwich core and facing sheets with a usual sandwich construct object like plywood, for example, heat is applied to the surface of the sandwich skin object. Where bond lines appear to be continuous, the core materials allow a heat marking on the surface sample, and the local temperatures of the surface will fall lightly along these bond lines. Where the bond line can be insignificant, missing, or in error, however, localised temperature does not drop. Infrared photography of the front will then show the placement and area of the flawed adhesive. Another such process employs thermal coatings that can change colour at reaching a specific heat.
In conclusion, nondestructive testing techniques also are now being shown to allow a total knowledge of the mechanical properties of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal methods appear most valuable in this area.
