Types of Non-Destructive Testing

The tensile-strength test is innately destructive; in the process of collecting information, the sample is destroyed. While this is excusable when a decent supply of the material exists, nondestructive tests are safer for materials that are expensive or complex to create or that have been shaped into completed or semifinished items.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive process, used to detect surface marks and weaknesses in samples, requires a penetrating fluid, which is either visibly dyed or fluorescent. After being smeared on the surface of the sample material and allowed to sink into any small imperfections, the fluid is removed, leaving easily uncovered cracks and weaknesses. Another such process, applicable to nonmetals, employs an electrically charged fluid smeared on the nonmetal surface. After the extra liquid is cleared off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the surface of the sample and draws to the flaws. Neither of these techniques, however, can identify internal weaknesses.

Radiation

Internal, like external imperfections, can be identified under X-ray or gamma-ray techniques in which the radiation scans the material and impinges on an ideal photographic film. Under some circumstances, it is possible to focus the X rays to a single part in the sample, allowing a three-dimensional description of the flaw shape along with its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of areas involves transmission of sound waves higher than human hearing range within the sample. Under the reflection method, a sound wave is sent from one part of the test material, reflected from the opposite end, then returned back to a receiver that is situated at the original part. Upon isolating a break or imperfection in the test sample, the sound wave is reflected and its movement adapted. The actual delay is a mark of the flaw’s location; a map of the material can be formed to show the location and dimensions of the weaknesses. Using the through-transmission method, the transmitter and receiver need to be placed at the opposite sides of the subject; delays in the transmission of the sound waves are found to target and measure imperfections. More often than not a water medium is used through the use of which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a sample are largely reflected by its overall structure, magnetic techniques are sometimes used to demonstrate the location and indicative shape of voids and marks. In magnetic testing, an apparatus is utilized that consists of a big measure of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Placed within the primary coil is a shorter coil (the secondary coil), to which is secured an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the primary coil forces electrical current to charge through the secondary coil through the technique of induction. If an iron piece is inserted in the secondary coil, acute changes in the secondary current can implicate marks in the rod. This process only isolates differences between parts along the length of a bar and will not locate elongated or continuous marks that much. A parallel skill, making use of eddy currents induced with a primary coil, also may be used to detect imperfections and marks. A steady current is induced in the test material. Weaknesses that exist within the path of the current determine resistance of the test piece; this change should be measured with suitable processes.

Infrared

Infrared techniques also have been used to isolate material continuity in intricate constructual items. In testing the durability of adhesive conjoinments with the sandwich core and facing sheets with a ordinary sandwich construction item like plywood, for example, heat is applied to the surface of the sandwich skin material. Infrared photography of the area can then show the situation and shape of the marked adhesive. A similar method uses thermal coatings to change hue upon reaching a set heat.
